Greek phrase meaning “I am,” repeated as a name for God in the Greek text in, for example, Exodus 3:14 and John 8:58.
Ein Gev:
The modern name of a kibbutz situated near the New Testament–period Greco-Roman city of Hippos located on eastern shore of the Sea of Galilee.
Ein Karim:
A town southwest of Jerusalem and the traditional site of the birth of John the Baptist.
Elias:
A title frequently given to a forerunner, in this case John the Baptist.
Elijah:
An Old Testament prophet who ministered in the Northern Kingdom of Israel. Malachi prophesied that Elijah would return again to the earth. In 1836, Elijah did return to restore the sealing keys to the earth. This authority is used in performing all the ordinances of the gospel for the living and the dead.
Elisabeth:
The mother of John the Baptist, a kinswoman of Mary. She belonged to the priestly family of Aaron.
Enlightenment:
The time period from the mid-sixteenth century to the end of the eighteenth century wherein the prevailing way of thinking tended toward reason rather than faith.
Enoch:
The seventh in a line of generations from Adam. He had a vision of the coming of Jesus Christ, of His life, ministry, death, and Resurrection. Enoch and his city were taken to heaven for their righteousness (Moses 7).
